Major works on the West Gate Freeway

Overview

From 10 January until March 2024, crews will be carrying out asphalting of the West Gate Freeway between Millers Road and the M80 Ring Road interchange.

In March, there will be an overnight closure of the West Gate Bridge, in both directions, for gantry installation works.

Drivers should plan ahead and allow extra travel time while lanes, ramps and roads are closed.

Gantry installation works

46 overhead gantries are being installed on the West Gate Freeway, M80 Ring Road and Princes Freeway including interchange ramps. These gantries will hold information such as traffic signs or electronic signs that show the speed limit or lane closures. They will also eventually carry toll points as well, when the project becomes operational by 2025.

To install these gantries, there will be a number of overnight freeway closures of the West Gate or Princes freeways in one or both directions at a time to ensure they can be safely installed

These works are planned during the summer period when there are typically less vehicles on the road and when the asphalting process can be the most efficient.

Significant delays are expected.
